Right from the start, from the wordless opening musical number, “Concerto in F,” it’s clear that An American In Paris will be unlike any other musical you’ve ever seen on stage. The balletic, bustling street scene of the City of Light is like a Jean Béraud painting come to life, and it’s visually and aurally gorgeous. It also sets the stage for the improbable romance between American GI/budding artist Jerry Mulligan (Jack Mullen) and Parisian shopgirl Lise Dassin (Samantha Barnes). Reagle Music Theatre artistic director Rachel Bertone (who directed and choreographed) and company deliver an exquisitely staged and imaginative rendering of this updated version of the 1951 MGM screen classic to the Robinson Theater in Waltham for a limited (two-week) run.

All Shook Up is a jukebox musical inspired by and featuring two dozen hit songs from the Elvis Presley songbook, including “Hound Dog,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” and the titular song. Two-time Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro’s (Memphis) book is inspired by the comedies of William Shakespeare, including Twelfth Night, Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Much Ado About Nothing. The mix of rousing (and arousing) Elvis R&B songs and Shakespearean sonnets, with some Footloose, Hairspray, and Bye Bye Birdie influences, make for a delightful and refreshing rom-com combination.

It’s almost summertime, and that means it’s time to roll out the classics at Waltham’s Reagle Music Theater. Artistic director Rachel Bertone has chosen two American musical theater standards, opening the season with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific and closing with Sondheim’s An American in Paris in August, with the Elvis-themed jukebox musical “All Shook Up” sandwiched in between. American musical theater standards are what Reagle does best, and it’s tough to go wrong with a show that offers a score like South Pacific’s, especially with a cast that features Boston musical stalwarts Jennifer Ellis, Christopher Chew, and Lisa Yuen.

Welcome to the 1930’s aboard the luxury liner S.S. American sailing from New York to London with a group of unusual passengers. Reagle Music Theatre of Boston’s second show of their 50th season is the classic 1934 musical “Anything Goes” by Cole Porter. The show was originally written for Ethel Merman back in the 1930’s. It was revised in 1962 and again in 1987 when it starred Patti Lupone as Reno. The premise of the show is boy, Billy Crocker, who loves girl, Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to wealthy British suitor, Sir Evelyn, who is pursued by singing and dancing evangelist Reno Sweeney. Throw in boy’s heavy drinking boss, girl’s overbearing and domineering mother, public enemy # 13 and his sexy gun moll, Reno’s fallen angels, the captain, crew and assorted passengers. Director Eileen Grace infuses this show with high energy as well as supplying the fabulous choreography while Dan Rodriguez supplies the fantastic musical direction. Their combined expertise makes this one of the must see musicals of the summer season.
